Dead Battery or Bad Alternator? Know the Difference
When Your Car Won't Start, the Cause Isn't Always the Battery
You turn the key and get nothing — or a slow, labored crank. Most people assume it's the battery. Sometimes it is. But if your alternator has stopped charging the battery while you drive, a brand-new battery will leave you stranded just the same. Getting the right diagnosis first saves you from buying parts you don't need.
Battery vs. Alternator: What's Actually Going On
The battery's job is to start the car. The alternator's job is to recharge the battery and power your electronics while the engine runs. When the alternator fails, it stops replenishing the battery — so even a healthy battery drains down within miles. Common signs of each:
- Weak or dead battery: Slow crank on startup, car won't start after sitting overnight, battery warning light
- Failing alternator: Dimming headlights while driving, electronics acting strange, car stalls shortly after jump-start, battery warning light
- Both can cause: Battery warning light, complete no-start
A jump-start that holds for days usually points to the battery. A jump-start that only lasts a short drive usually points to the alternator.
How We Test Both
We load-test the battery and check alternator output voltage — typically you want to see 13.5 to 14.7 volts at the battery terminals with the engine running. If output drops below that range, the alternator isn't keeping up. This takes about 15 to 20 minutes and tells us exactly which component is at fault before we recommend anything.
Common Question: Can I drive with a bad alternator?
Technically, yes — for a short while. But you're running purely on battery reserve, and when that's gone, the car shuts down. Headlights, power steering assist, and fuel pump all need electricity. It's not a "get to it next week" situation.
