Engine and Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Two Filters Most Drivers Forget About
If your car feels a little sluggish, your gas mileage has quietly crept down, or the air coming through your vents smells stale, there's a good chance one or both of your air filters are overdue for a swap. It's one of the most overlooked maintenance items on any car — and one of the easiest to fix.
Engine Air Filter vs. Cabin Air Filter
They sound similar but do different jobs. The engine air filter keeps dust, pollen, and debris out of your engine's combustion process. A clogged one restricts airflow, which forces your engine to work harder and can noticeably reduce fuel economy. Most manufacturers recommend replacing it every 15,000–30,000 miles, though driving on dusty roads around Concord or the East Bay can shorten that interval.
The cabin air filter cleans the air that blows through your vents — the air you and your passengers breathe. A dirty cabin filter means weaker airflow from your AC or heat, and it can trap mold, pollen, and exhaust particles right inside the cabin. If anyone in your car has allergies, this one matters a lot.
Signs It's Time to Replace Them
- Reduced fuel efficiency you can't explain
- Sluggish acceleration or rough idling
- Weak or musty-smelling airflow from vents
- Visible dirt or discoloration on the filter itself
- It's been more than 20,000 miles since the last replacement
Quick Q&A
Can I just inspect the filters myself? You can pull them and look — a gray or brown filter caked with debris is a clear sign. But filters can also harbor bacteria and allergens that aren't visible. When in doubt, replace them. The parts are inexpensive and the labor is minimal.
