Is Your Engine Due for a Tune-Up?
When Your Car Feels "Off" But Nothing Is Obviously Broken
Your car starts, drives, and gets you where you need to go — but something feels different. Maybe it hesitates when you accelerate, idles roughly at a red light, or the gas mileage has quietly slipped. A lot of drivers live with these symptoms for months before realizing a basic engine tune-up could fix most of them.
What a Tune-Up Actually Covers
The term "tune-up" gets used loosely, but at its core it means replacing the parts that wear out gradually and affect how cleanly your engine burns fuel. On most modern vehicles that includes:
- Spark plugs — the most common culprit for misfires, rough idle, and sluggish acceleration
- Air filter — a clogged filter chokes airflow and drops fuel efficiency
- Fuel filter — keeps debris out of injectors (where applicable by vehicle)
- PCV valve — a cheap part that affects idle quality and oil consumption
- Ignition wires or coil boots — on older vehicles, these degrade and cause misfires
Many manufacturers recommend spark plug replacement every 30,000 miles on copper plugs and every 60,000 to 100,000 miles on iridium or platinum plugs. If you're not sure where your vehicle stands, a quick inspection can tell you.
Does a Tune-Up Improve Gas Mileage?
Q: Will a tune-up actually improve my fuel economy?
A: Often, yes. Worn spark plugs cause incomplete combustion, which wastes fuel. Studies from the U.S. Department of Energy suggest fixing a misfiring plug can improve mileage by up to 4%. That's not a huge number, but across 12,000 miles a year in a typical Concord commute, it adds up.
What We Do at Super Station
We've been servicing engines on Monument Blvd since 1990, so we've seen just about every make and model that drives through Concord, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek. When you bring your car in for a tune-up, we start with a quick diagnostic to confirm what actually needs attention — we're not going to replace parts that don't need replacing. Spark plug replacement typically runs $195 and up depending on the vehicle, and the job usually takes under two hours. We'll let you know the full cost before we touch anything.
Walk-ins are welcome. Stop by 1650 Monument Blvd, Concord, or call us at (925) 685-0101 to set a time that works for you.
