What "STAR Certified" Actually Means
California's Bureau of Automotive Repair designates certain stations as STAR certified, meaning they're licensed to test vehicles that the DMV specifically routes for a more thorough inspection. If your renewal notice says you need a STAR station, a regular smog shop can't legally sign off on your test — you have to go to a STAR-certified location.
