Tire Check Before Your Summer Road Trip
Summer Heat and Tires Don't Always Get Along
Concord summers get hot — and hot pavement puts real stress on tires. Underinflated tires flex more in heat, which builds up internal temperature fast. That's one of the main reasons blowouts spike in summer, especially on long drives out to Tahoe, the coast, or down to SoCal for the long weekend.
If you haven't looked at your tires since winter, now's a good time. A few minutes of attention before a road trip is a lot cheaper than a tow and a ruined BBQ weekend.
What to Actually Check
- Tread depth: Stick a quarter in the groove. If you can see the top of Washington's head, you're under 4/32" — replace soon.
- Inflation: Heat alone can push pressure up 4-6 PSI. Check cold, before you've driven more than a mile.
- Even wear: Feathering or cupping across the tread usually means the tires need rotation or the wheels need balancing.
- Sidewall cracks or bulges: These don't fix themselves. A bulge means the internal structure is compromised — don't drive on it.
Rotation and Balancing: What's the Difference?
Rotation moves tires to different positions on the car so they wear evenly over time. Balancing corrects tiny weight imbalances in the wheel-and-tire assembly that cause vibration at highway speeds. Most manufacturers recommend rotating every 5,000-7,500 miles — roughly every other oil change. If you feel a shimmy in the steering wheel above 55 mph, that's a classic balancing symptom.
Q: Can I just rotate without balancing?
Yes, but if you're already feeling vibration, balancing at the same time makes sense. When we move tires to a new position, any imbalance that wasn't noticeable before can show up on a different axle. Doing both together saves you a second trip.
Flat Repair vs. Replacement
Not every flat means a new tire. If the puncture is in the center tread area and smaller than a quarter-inch, a proper plug-and-patch repair is safe and reliable. Punctures near or in the sidewall can't be safely repaired — that tire needs to go.
